Remember that scene in Howard Stern’s movie Private Parts when he shows up for work to find his station has suddenly switched formats to country music?
Well, that’s exactly what happened yesterday except I didn’t hear Dwight Yoakam but an oldie (but goodie) Donna Summer’s hit.
Let’s rewind: When I was approached by 106.9 Free Fm in San Francisco to do a live radio show 15 months ago I watched Private Parts again. We had started a homegrown podcast in Elizabeth’s living room and I knew nothing about the radio business. My best friend Andrew suggested now that I’m in radio, I’d better watch it again.
This became our joke. Whenever I’d express concern about my show (i.e. Andrew, when exactly do you think I’ll be able to make a living in radio? So, when do I get a producer? An assistant producer? Do you think it’s an occupational hazzard to NEVER go out on Saturday nights? (I have a SEX show you know, that’s when all the sex is happening!)
Andrew would always say to me, “Well, Em, at least you’ve got a show today, tomorrow you may show up and they’ll be playing Kenny Rogers”
Among other things that Andrew is right about (and there are many) I did get a call along with the rest of the station yesterday that 106.9 Free FM in San Francisco is now a classic hits rock station.
Everyone was shell shocked and today most everyone was looking for work.
I already miss doing the live show because my issues aside (and who doesn’t have some issues?) there’s nothing like live radio, I absolutely love it and the friends I’ve made at the station.
However, I also started this show as a podcaster and will continue to bring you weekly podcasts. In fact, some of you have written that you liked my original Sex With Emily podcasts even better. Most are near the bottom of the listen page www.sexwithemily.com
Plus recent developments – that must remain nameless for now – could mean you’ll be able to hear the show live again very soon (maybe even in a city near you AND me!)
Thanks to everyone for listening, calling and writing every week.
Please stay tuned to this site for breaking news and Sex With Emily updates. Send me your thoughts – feedback@sexwithemily or comment here.
Tomorrow is my first Saturday night off in 1 1/2 years yet I kind of miss you already.
Well, I guess you can’t have it all in love OR work…

can’t believe you’re not doing live radio anymore. i really enjoyed the show being live. radio waves are a powerfull medium which allow people to operate on the same frequency. you’re show is quality tho. the old pod casts are just as good as the radio podcasts. they are amazing. really educational and lots of fun. there aren’t many things in life which are both educational and fun at the same time. they are also sexy. you won’t find educational fun and sexy together in one place at the same time very easily. i trust your podcasts will come thru without the radio and save the world…..one orgasm at a time! take care. You know I actually started listening before the radio show. Even before the Chron article, believe it or not! While I do find Sex with Emily entertaining, I actually have learned some things too! Those first radio broadcasts: “Ummm…which button do I press? Hello? Are we on? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention…” Anyway, that was fun to listen to. I hope you are able to keep it going wherever you land.

I’m sad to see my 2 favorite ladies of talk radio (you & Virgie) get laid off due to the station’s change of format. I’ve listened to your show & to V’s ever since I heard of both. But at least you have your independent podcasts to fall back on, & the FCC won’t breathe down your neck anymore. I wish both you ladies the best in your respective future endeavors.

Totally depressed about Free FM dying and you and Virgie losing your live shows. This is sadly ironic because of all the ads Free FM would play about how you can go listen to bad classic rock on other stations.

Emily – I’m so sorry to hear about the show. As a long time listener on the east coast, I usually didn’t have the opportunity to listen to your show live, but those time when I did – well, I was always tempted to call in, if not for anything else, then to just support the show.
I am however releaved that I’ll still be able to enjoy new podcasts – I’d hate to think of withdrawal from that great radio voice of yours.

thanks everyone for writing. i plan to do live radio again soon. i’m in the process of syndicating and looking for advertisers (i welcome all of your thoughts — for stations and advertisers!)
it seems like it’s moving along. i promise to still release podcasts and videos regularly until i get settled somewhere.
it’s wonderful to hear from everyone and thanks for your ongoing support of the show.
much love

Hmmm – if Martha Stewart’s daughter has her own radio show on Sirius, I don’t see how they can turn you down
).
Of course I would hope that you keep it on public radio, and not satilite.
I would think that your choice for advertisers should be geared at your audience – Durex, Trojan, KY and Cialis seem like obvious candidates (NoDoze may have been a good candidate for you previous time slot). I don’t know what your actual demographic consists of, but maybe magazines like Esquire or Maxim would be interested in advertizing.
Depending on where your next show is – the local clubs might also be interested in advertizing.
Just thought I’d share some thoughts (probably trying to make up for the fact that I missed calling in while you were on-air
May 21, 2007 at 9:29 pm
I’m sorry that the format was suddenly canceled. I really enjoyed listening to it. Especially identified with the man who called and said there was no way you’d go out on a date with him.
Problem is your show might be too controversial for a standard AM/FM format. This is not the 70s (Bill Ballance or Toni Grant anymore).
But there are some advent guarde radio stations out there— KKUP (which could really use a boost) and KFJC.
Trouble is…how far you do want to drive? There is an interesting ecletic station in Fresno– 105.9 FM- at least it used to be.

Emily,
I’m sad for you that the radio gig didn’t work out. I did love that you had live call in, but missed the freedom you had with the original podcast-only. I’ve come across a series of podcasts from one fellow, one of them is Dating4Men, that appears to originate as live streaming audio with people calling in. You might consider that route and contacting him on the nuts and bolts of how he’s doing it.

hey emily why don’t you create a chat!
May 23, 2007 at 7:27 am
thanks so much for everyone’s comments. i’ve been working hard to put together a live show in SF (and elsewhere).
we’ve got several stations interested but just need to secure the advertisers. wish it was easier….
i’ll keep you posted.
also, i may do a live podcast online next week…meaning you listen live online (not on the radio) but you can still call in and we can talk.
would you listen to a live on-line show for now? weekday nights? weekends?
let me know…

Emily,
I think you could get a wider audience with the live on-line show. Frankly, I couldn’t listen to the radio show because I live in the north bay and the reception was horrendous.
May 25, 2007 at 3:00 pm
I like the idea of a live on-line webcast show for the interim. Were you thinking of the same time slot (2am EST)?
May 27, 2007 at 4:48 am
Say it ain’t so, Emily!
I’m on the East coast and I did my best to tune in live as often as possible. Of course the Podcasts are great. I drop all the links into a Winamp playlist and they play straight through(almost like a live show)
I notice that some of the guys from the old format are on 95.7 “Free(?!?) FM” now. What? They took Andy and Opey but couldn’t move the late night lawyer?
Its OK because you are better than that. Between the interviews with pros from the sex business and reports from events, you cover the subject so well.
Hang in there and hold on to your dream of making the airwaves safe for sex.

Em:
I, too, am saddened by your departure from live radio. But, living in Kentucky, I rarely was able to stay up to listen to the live show anyway. (The one exception was when I listened live one Sunday afternoon from Singapore…) So continuing as a podcast certainly works for me as well as many others out here — “here” being the wilderness outside the SF area.
It’s also a chance to take your show on the road since you’re no longer fettered to a particular station’s studio.
Keep up the great work. Thanks for your ever-present enthusiasm.

Emily!
You’ve been on my IPod for over a year I miss getting new shows. Please do more! A video podcast would be great, but there’s something about a audio podcast that is much more personal and intimate.
Can’t wait to hear more Emily!

Emily,
I really enjoyed your show. I listened on my way from work and also followed the podcasts. I really hope you come back to live radio. I thought you were on vacation, but after 3 Saturdays, I checked the website to see you were gone!
I wish you all the best! You’ve done a great job! Enjoy your Saturdays off while you can!
Take care,
Nina

Emily, I loved the show, and I have been listening to the podcast for the better part of a year. Let me know if there is anything we listener/participants can do to support syndication, or broadcasting locally again, hopefully on a station with live webcast. Please drop me a line if you are planning to visit or appear in Seattle; I would love attending to see your sexiness in person.
You should consider having a studio audience!

Dear, sweet Emily…
*hugs* I owe you so much. From helping me keep my sanity at a bloody boring grave shift job (you’re not the only one who worked Saturday nights), to putting me on the front lines of the Exotic Erotic ball. I lost track of you when I went back to the 9-5, but I hope to see/hear you and your minions sometime soon…

Thanks Emily for the great news, Ill try to be there in SF on tuesday, congratulations, keep the hard work that’s why I admire you xo
